1941 May. This picture was taken in the middle of the day, around 3:00, outdoors near a roadside. In the picture, there are two people; a man and a woman. The man looks about 35, and the woman looks about 30. They are African American, and are wearing cheap clothes and hats. They look like they are struggling with something. What catches my eye first is the woman, and the big package she is balancing on her head. The structure in this picture is the cart on wheels near the man. I’m not sure what it is or what it was used for, but it was probably important in their task. The tone of this picture is sort of dark or negative. When you look at the man and the woman it makes you sort of sad to see them working in the heat of the day. It seems like it’s really hot outside, and that they shouldn’t be working in the condition of the day. This picture shows how there was never any rest for people during the depression. Everyone was constantly working in the rain or sun. They didn’t have a choice. If they wanted to survive and get passed this era of time, they needed to work constantly. One question I would ask the photographer of this picture would be: What were these people doing at the time? If I got to ask the people inside the picture a question, I would ask: How long do you think you’ll have to keep constantly working to survive? When is this going to end?
kellie; Birdhouse and landscape at an old plantation home near Eutaw, Alabama. Delano, Jack: photographer. CREATED/PUBLISHED
1941 May. This picture appears to be taken in the morning, outdoors, near the country side. There are no people in this picture, but what catches my eyes first are the benches under the big tree. The tree is looming over the two benches. In the background is a beautiful view of the country. Up close is a big bird house on a tall tree stump. The structures in this picture are the bird house and the benches. They are in good condition, and are the center of attention in the photograph. It shows that people were still doing everyday activities like housing birds, or sitting to watch the sunset. The tone of the picture is very light and positive. It’s kind of cheerful and brings hope to people. Everywhere else you look there are people dying and abandoned houses, but this picture is proof that there was still beauty in the world even through the hardest times. This is a nice picture to look at, because even though it does not depict what the great depression was, there is no going around the fact that it was taken at the same time as the other depression pictures. Like I said before, this photograph is a glimmer of hope that the world would get better eventually, because even in the most depressing times, there are still places where you can feel happy. Two questions that I might ask the photographer of this picture would be: Did you think this photo would create hope for people? Were you trying to depict happiness, or were you just trying to take a picture of a birdhouse, and the feeling of happiness happened accidentally?

Drying up corn near Eutaw, Alabama. Lange, Dorothea,: photographer. CREATED/PUBLISHED
1936 June. This picture was taken during the daytime, as if around 2:00 in the middle of the afternoon. It was taken outdoors in a corn field. In the photograph, there are no people, but there are two dying corn stalks right up close, and a whole lot more in the back. That is also the first thing that catches my eye, and not because it’s the only thing in the field. It’s significant because their not only cornstalks, but they’re dying corn stalks. That’s saying something about everything that was going on at the time this was taken. This photo has no people or structures in it, but it has a heaviness to it. Since the photograph is so old, and the mood is so humid, the picture is kind of weighed down. It is a semi-negative print, but it has a lot of visible light, though the feeling is anything but light. This photograph is sad. It makes you sort of depressed because the corn stalks are dying alone in a big open field. The photographer did a good job of capturing the depressing part of the Great Depression, no pun intended. Two questions I would ask the photographer would be: Why did you choose to photograph a corn field? How did you feel when you were there, looking at the dying corn stalks?

2- This photo was taken outside in daylight. It looks as if it is in a rural area. It seems as if it was day, but it wasn't a very sunny day. The children are standing on what looks like a porch made from wood, and there is a chair on the left behind the girl.
3- In this picture, I see three young, African American children in this picture. There is one boy, and two girls, and they are all looking into the distance. They seem to be about nine or ten years old. They are all gathered around a pole, and the boy in the middle is holding onto the pole with his left hand, and is leaning on the pole with his whole body. He is leaning his face against the pole as if he is tired. He is wearing a raggedy long sleeved, collared shirt under ripped up light denim overalls that are rolled up at the bottom. There is a girl on either side of the boy, and they are both in dresses. The girl on the left has a slightly darker dress than the girl on the right, but both dresses have stains and dirt on them. Their hair is pinned up in a pony tail, or it is really short, becuase either way, it can't be seen. All of the children are barefoot.
4- The photo was taken on what seems to be a porch of a house. It looks really old, but stable. There is a doorway behind the children, but beyond the door eveything is black.
5- The tone of this photo is dark and negative because the children look really tired and sad, and they look like they are waiting for something good to happen to them to get them out of their terrible condition.
6- This photograph is an example of the way African Americans lived during the Great Depression. These children look very depressed, and they are dressed in ripped and stained clothing. They most likely can't afford to buy or make new clothes, so they have to continue in the clothing that they have.
7- Where exactly were the children when this photograph was taken?
What were they looking at outside of the picture frame?

2- This picture takes place outside. It has a very rural surrounding, and the lighting is good. It is day.
3- There are three people in this photograph. I can't tell exactly what age there are because I can't see their faces, but there seems for be one child, and two adults. They are all wearing light colors, most likely becuase they seem to be in the heat. It seems like there are two women in the pictures, becuase they are wearing dresses; one is a child. The man is in the middle. The woman is bending while she hoes, and the girl and the man are almost upright. The man in the middle catches my eye first because he is standing up straghter than the others, and he is in the middle of the two others.
4- This picture takes place in the middle of a field. The ground is covered with what looks like plants and leaves. There are no buildings or structures in the distance or anywhere in the photo frame.
5- This picture is a heavy picture; the farm workers look very tired as they hoe. There is a negative tone to this photograph; the field is so bare and empty except for the tree farmers.
6- This photograph is a good representative of the Great Depression because it shows how people work for money. Also, it shows the measures the children were willing to take to make some money because there is a girl working in the fields.
7- Why weren't there anymore workers in the fields behind them?
How are the people in the photo related?

3- There is one African American man in this picture. He is sitting, and he appears to be very old. He is wearing a stipped long-sleeve shirt, and a bandana on his head. The wrinkles on his face catch my eye as i first look at the photo.
4- The man in the picture is surrounded by two beds. One in back of the chair, and one on the left side of the room. They have quilt patterns on the sheets. The walls are covered with newspapers. It seems to be in an okay condition. Not extravagnt, but not neccessarily poor.
5- This pictue is heavy, negative, and dar; the condition this former slave is in is sad. He is all wrinkly and small becuase I expect he has been working on the fields his whole life.
6- This is a good representation of the Great Depression becuase it shows the state that old and former slaves were in after years int he fields.
7- Who were the other beds for in the room?
Why are there newpapers on the wall behind him?

2. The setting of this photograph takes place inside of a small room with a little bit of lighting. I think that this is in a rural area since the room isn't so nice. This picture probably takes place during night time.
3. In this photograph I see a family of four living in small one room house with two beds. The family includes a mother, father, grandfather, and a young boy maybe at the age of three or four. The mother, grandfather, and little boy are all sitting down on a bed in the room. The father is standing up on the side of the bed. The family looks to be wearing decent clothing since they aren't torn or ragged at all. Both of the adult men are wearing hats but, only the grandfather is wearing shoes. The others are barefoot. Although the family has nice clothes, their living space doesn't seem so nice. The room is very tiny and the walls are covered in what it seems to be newspaper? The only thing besides the newspaper on the walls is a framed picture that sits on the wall beside the bed.
4. This picture is of a home of a small family. It seems to be in a worn out condition. The walls and ceiling look pretty old. The floor looks good though. There isnt much space for the fmaily to live in. There is only a small walking space between the two beds in the room. Also, there is no other furniture besides the two beds and picture frame.
5. The tone of this picture seems to be dark, negative, and heavy. This is because the entire family is all crammed into one small room and there is not enough living space for everyone. They all have to share beds and it seems as if they don't have very much. Besides that the rest of the room is empty.
6. This picture shows how people were affected by the Great Depression. People lost a lot of money and they couldn't afford a nice home for their families to stay in. Most people would live in one room houses with their entire family. This family feautred here has to all sleep in one room with many people in one bed. There isn't any other furniture besides the beds either in the room.
7. Two questions I would ask this family would be:
-What did you do during this period of time to survive and keep the family fed?
-How different were things for your family before the Great Depression?

2. The setting of this photograph takes place outside. This was taken during the afternoon when the sun was shining very bright. Also, I can tell that this picture was taken in a rural area because you can see many trees in the background and there aren't any other buildings.
3. In this photograph, there are four children. There are three girls and one boy. The girl on the far left seems to be the youngest at maybe age 9/ The next 11, and next 13 or 14. The boy that is next to the three girls looks to be around 12 years old. The girls in the picture seem to be wearing nice clothing as if they were going to church on a sunday morning. The boy, however, is wearing clothes like a farmer with a straw hat and overalls. They all are barefoot, though. The first thing that caught my eye was how three young girls that seem very proper and polite are hanging out with a farmer boy. it just seems odd that they are all very different and yet they seem to be with eachother.
4. The children are standing in a rural area with many trees in the background. What is actually directly behind them is unidentified however... :/
5. The tone of this picture is happy, positive, and light. This is because the girls in the picture seem to be very happy and pleasant with the smiles on their faces. They seem to be enjoying themselves outside hanging out with eachother.
6. If my assumptions are right about this family being rich, I would say that this picture shows that not everyone was greatly affected by the Great Depression. Some families were able to care for their families with extra money left from their past riches. Their children would stay happy and pleased in addition to the family staying calm and relaxed about the entire situation with the stock market crashing. Even with these horrible times, some we still able to keep moving forward.
7. Two questions I would ask these kids include:
-Did you really enjoy life during the Great Depression?
-What was it like having to live with siblings that were completely different from eachtoher?

2. This picture takes place outside. It looks like it is during the late afternoon. This is also in a rural area since there is a farm int he background and lots of land with no other buildings or people in sight.
3. In this photograph, there are eight people. There are five adults, three female, and two male. Also, there are three young children most likely around the ages of 2, 4, and 12, going from right to left. The clothing that this family is wearing is all old and ragged. They look very worn out because of working on the farm. Most of the clothes are either made form white cloth or jean material. The thing that caught my eye first was the large amount of people standing outside the same house and the fact that there are very small and young children there that have to live in these horrible conditions growing up.
4. The setting of this photograph takes place at the family's home/farm. It looks very hot and humid outside since the family looks very exhausted sitting out on the front porch. There is a lot of space of course since it is a farm and all. There aren't many other surrounding structures besides some random pieces of wood and a really long log.
5. The tone of this photograph is heavy and negative. This is because the people featured in this picture are all tired and worn out. They look a bit sad, too because of the way they have to live in order to survive.
6. This picture represents how hard families had to work during the Great Depression. In order to survive they had to do many difficult daily tasks to earn money.
7. Questions I would ask this family:
-What was everyone's specific daily duty?
-How much did you earn from working so hard like this?
This picture is located on a rural farm land, obviously outside. The setting of the picture takes place in Eutaw, Alabama. Two people are working on the fields. It seems to me that the sun is going down because the lighting in the photograph signifies a slight darkness.
In this picture, I see two young African Americans hoeing and chopping their farm. They look about seven and ten years old to me. The seven year old, standing farther back, is wearing a straw hat on his head to keep the sun from his face. He wears nothing on his feet. The young boy has on one big raggedy t-shirt, which looks like a dress on him. On what looks like a ten year old is the same straw hat on his head. She, too, has no shoes on her feet. It looks like she’s wearing a rag skirt and baggy t shirt, almost like her brother. Nothing’s unique about any of them. The first thing that catches my eye is the girl plowing. When I see her, I notice how young she is and instantly think how tough it must be for a girl so adolescent to be working as she is on a farm!
Not applicable.
The quality of this photo is emotionally kind of in between heavy and light. I think this because just seeing children as young as 7-10 years old working hard out on a farm is just cruel in my thoughts. It is negative in my mind because I don’t think children that young should have to work the way they are above. It shadows a dark reflection in my mind of the Great Depression and child labor because I don’t think kids should be working! The actual picture quality is dark, and semi-heavy.
In my opinion, this picture shows how desperate families were back in the time of the Great Depression. Children as young as seven years old were working on a field with dangerous equipment! I don’t think children that young should have to anything like that. The kids had to work as so because their families were very poor. Even with all five children of this African American tenant family, they only lived on the earnings of fifty dollars a year. The children look like they are hard at work.
Two questions I might ask the children in this picture would be as followed:
-What is it like being so young, yet working so hard for your family's survival?
-How many hours a day do you work hoeing and chopping?

The setting of this photograph seems to be at a storefront in Greensboro, Alabama. It looks like it is daytime out because the lighting in this picture is somewhat bright. It is in the urban area. I can tell because it’s a grocery store, and you normally find shacks and what not in the rural area.
In this photograph I see one man standing in front of the McCollum Grocery Co. He is wearing a suit, a collared shirt, and a top hat. He is wearing shoes, and I assume they are nice, dress shoes because of what he is wearing. The man looks like he is African American in my opinion. In front of him lay seven or eight watermelon on the ground. There is a table outside held up by barrels. On the tables are bags. The window to the grocery store has many things written on it, specifically things that are sold at the store and their prices. For example, it says “Juice 49 cents.” The first thing that catches my eye in this photograph is the many things written on the window.
In this picture there is a business structure called the McCollum Grocery Co. It is in pretty decent condition, considering the time period that it is taken in. Surrounding the structures are foods and things being sold outside.
The tone of this photograph is light in my opinion because it shows a nice little happy grocery store with a man standing outside of it. I think that the photograph is negative because the man just seems to be standing there and not really looking to buy anything. I think that he doesn't have enough money to get what he wants. It seems to be dark to me because it's during the dark days.
This picture shows that most people, like the man in this picture, don't have enough money to buy even the cheapest things to us now a days. Juice for 49 cents is a ridiculously low price in modern times! Back then it was very expensive because people didn't have much money due to the stock market crashing.
I would ask the man in this picture two things:
-How much money do you make on a daily basis?
-Do you think that juice for 49 cents is a high price?
The setting of this photograph is outdoors on a field in Alabama. The lighting is very light, and it looks to me as if this picture was taken during the daytime. It’s in the rural area, specifically on a field.
In this photograph I see a young plow girl working on a field. From the looks of her legs, she seems to be about ten-twelve years old. She has nothing on her feet, and all I can see on the rest of her body is baggy capris. The first thing that catches my eye in this picture is the young girl’s legs. I can tell this is a girl because they’re skinny and also because of the caption. She is a young white girl.
Not applicable.
The tone of this paragraph seems to be a bit heavy. I think this because I don’t think a young girl should have to work on a field at such a young age. The actual photograph is positive because the lighting is a bit bright. I think it’s semi-dark because not only was it taken during a dark period of time, the Great Depression, but a young girl plowing on a field with her feet and legs all dirty is not right to me.
In my opinion, this picture shows how desperate families were for money. They were so in need of money and jobs that they had to have their young children working on fields.
Two questions I would ask the girl in this photograph would be:
-What does it feel like to know you play a big role in your family’s income? -Do you mind working plowing fields?

- This picture is located on a rural farm land, obviously outside. The setting of the picture takes place in Eutaw, Alabama. Two people are working on the fields. It seems to me that the sun is going down because the lighting in the photograph signifies a slight darkness.
- In this picture, I see two young African Americans hoeing and chopping their farm.
- Not applicable.
- The quality of this photo is emotionally kind of in between heavy and light.
- In my opinion, this picture shows how desperate families were back in the time of the Great Depression.
- Two questions I might ask the children in this picture would be as followed:
-What is it like being so young, yet working so hard for your family's survival?-How many hours a day do you work hoeing and chopping?

- The setting of this photograph seems to be at a storefront in Greensboro, Alabama. It looks like it is daytime out because the lighting in this picture is somewhat bright. It is in the urban area. I can tell because it’s a grocery store, and you normally find shacks and what not in the rural area.
- In this photograph I see one man standing in front of the McCollum Grocery Co.
- In this picture there is a business structure called the McCollum Grocery Co. It is in pretty decent condition, considering the time period that it is taken in. Surrounding the structures are foods and things being sold outside.
- The tone of this photograph is light in my opinion because it shows a nice little happy grocery store with a man standing outside of it. I think that the photograph is negative because the man just seems to be standing there and not really looking to buy anything. I think that he doesn't have enough money to get what he wants. It seems to be dark to me because it's during the dark days.
- This picture shows that most people, like the man in this picture, don't have enough money to buy even the cheapest things to us now a days. Juice for 49 cents is a ridiculously low price in modern times! Back then it was very expensive because people didn't have much money due to the stock market crashing.
- I would ask the man in this picture two things:
-How much money do you make on a daily basis?-Do you think that juice for 49 cents is a high price?
- Bibliography: http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/I?fsaall:6:./temp/~ammem_L04l::displayType=1:m856sd=fsa:m856sf=8b29591:@@@
- The setting of this photograph is outdoors on a field in Alabama. The lighting is very light, and it looks to me as if this picture was taken during the daytime. It’s in the rural area, specifically on a field.
- In this photograph I see a young plow girl working on a field.
- Not applicable.
- The tone of this paragraph seems to be a bit heavy.
- In my opinion, this picture shows how desperate families were for money. They were so in need of money and jobs that they had to have their young children working on fields.
- Two questions I would ask the girl in this photograph would be:
-What does it feel like to know you play a big role in your family’s income?-Do you mind working plowing fields?
